CHC was an early national leader in the development of breastfeeding peer counselor programs and the training of peer counselors. In 1992, the Illinois WIC Program funded a video to promote the breastfeeding peer counselor model developed and expanded by CHC in Illinois. The producers of that film, Best Start Social Marketing, Inc., continued to partner with us over the years. Our collaborations included a second video on teens and breastfeeding, and a teen breastfeeding magazine.

In 1995, Best Start began work with the U.S. Department of Agriculture on a national WIC breastfeeding promotion campaign. CHC participated as consultants on several stages of that initiative, which became the Loving Support breastfeeding campaign. In 2003, USDA contracted with Best Start to carry out a second national breastfeeding campaign: Using Loving Support to Implement Best Practices in Peer Counseling. CHC served as consultants on that project, and subsequently conducted state-level Loving Support trainings in three states. CHC's twenty years of expertise in breastfeeding peer counselor work has been instrumental in historic national policy changes, and we continue to work both behind the scenes and on the front lines to promote breastfeeding in underserved communities.
